The United States of America Pickleball (USAP) recently made a groundbreaking announcement regarding new testing standards for paddles. This move has sent ripples through the pickleball community, as several popular paddles are set to be disqualified starting July 1, 2025. These changes aim to refine gameplay by addressing paddle performance and ensuring fair competition. Let’s dive deeper into what this means for players, manufacturers, and the sport as a whole.

The USAP has introduced a testing method that evaluates the Paddle and Ball Coefficient of Restitution (PBCoR). This standard measures the rebound effect of paddles, aiming to prevent excessive speed and control advantages caused by high-rebound paddles. This decision stems from concerns that certain paddles have created an unfair playing field, leading to imbalance in competitive matches.
The USAP stated that reducing the “power boost” from paddles with excessive rebound capabilities will:
-
Level the Playing Field: Ensure fair competition by minimizing paddle-related advantages.
-
Encourage Skill Development: Shift focus back to technique and control rather than relying on equipment advantages.
This rule change follows months of research and collaboration with manufacturers, ensuring that the transition is smooth for both players and the industry.

As part of the transition, USAP has released a list of paddles that will fail to meet the new standards and will lose their certification starting July 1, 2025. These paddles include:

In response to these changes, JOOLA announced that it will discontinue production of its MOD TA-15 Perseus paddle, a popular choice among players. Despite the discontinuation, the paddle remains available for purchase online and in stores until supplies are exhausted.
To support players during this transition, JOOLA has introduced a customer loyalty program. From November 1, 2024, to March 1, 2025, customers who purchased the MOD TA-15 Perseus can:
-
Receive a 50% discount on the new Pro 4 Perseus paddle, which is designed to comply with the updated standards.
-
Claim this offer between March 15, 2025, and April 30, 2025.
To participate, eligible customers must submit proof of purchase and register their MOD TA-15 paddle by the end of April 2025.

JOOLA has emphasized its commitment to meeting the highest industry standards and ensuring players have access to top-tier equipment. The company plans to launch its Pro Series paddles in March 2025. These paddles will be fully compliant with both UPA-A and USAP’s new testing protocols.
The new Pro 4 Perseus paddle will also be eligible for use in all major tournaments, including those sanctioned by PPA/MLP and other USAP-approved events starting mid-2025. JOOLA’s proactive strategy underscores its dedication to the pickleball community and its willingness to adapt to evolving standards.

The upcoming changes in paddle regulations have sparked widespread discussion within the pickleball community. Here are some key implications:
1. For Recreational Players
While recreational players may not feel an immediate impact, the shift in paddle standards could eventually affect their equipment choices as manufacturers phase out older models. Players should stay informed about which paddles remain approved for sanctioned tournaments.
2. For Competitive Players
The new standards will require competitive players to reevaluate their equipment preferences. Many will need to test new paddles to find ones that align with their playing style while meeting the updated regulations.
3. For Manufacturers
This transition period offers an opportunity for manufacturers to innovate and produce paddles that adhere to the new standards while maintaining performance. Companies like JOOLA and ProKennex are already leading the charge in this regard.
4. For the Sport’s Evolution
By prioritizing skill and control over equipment advantages, these changes could enhance the sport’s integrity and appeal, attracting more players and fostering fair competition.

[…] The Paddle/Ball Coefficient of Restitution (PBCoR) standard is a new testing method from USA Pickleball (USAP) used to evaluate pickleball paddle performance. This standard measures the rebound effect of paddles to prevent excessive speed and control advantages from high-rebound paddles. Concerns about paddles like the JOOLA MOD TA-15 creating an uneven playing field and competitive imbalance led to the implementation of the PBCoR standard (Lixi Sports, “New USAP Standards and Paddle Approvals for 2025“).
